What is Database Archiving?

Database Archiving is the act of removing from an operational database selected data objects that are not expected to be referenced again and placing them in an archive data store where they can be accessed if needed. Database Archiving applies to structured data stored in operational databases such as DB2, IMS, Oracle, SQL Server, IDMS, ADABAS, and others.

Why Would You do DB Archiving?

Improve Performance and Reduce Cost of Operational Applications

By removing inactive data from the operational environment the operational database becomes much smaller and easier to manage.  Performance goes up, utilities execute faster, recoveries and disaster recoveries get done much faster, storage costs are reduced, and cycles used are reduced. This translates to better performance and lower costs.

Reduce cost of maintaining data for retired applications

When an application stops being used but the data must be retained for many more years, database archiving can allow you to discontinue spending money on systems, DBMS software, application software, storage and specialized systems staff needed to keep the data in the operational environment in case it is needed.   The cost savings can be huge over the remaining life of the data.

Reduce cost and time to Modernize Legacy Applications

When replacing an older application with either a packaged application or own rebuilt application, the problem of what to do with the old data can be very expensive to accommodate.  Moving it to the new data structures is not always possible or practical.  Archiving the old data will reduce demands on the design of the new application, reduce the time to activate the new application and reduce the cost of operating the new application.

What SvalTech can help you with?

Education

Seminar – a one day seminar on the concepts of database archiving

Database Archivist Training – a 4 day class for DB Archivist technicians to learn how to design and implement a database archiving application

Consulting Services

SurveyWe will analyze your operational applications and help you determine which ones will benefit from using database archiving technology.  We will assist in building the business justification design requirements for those you select to implement.

Operational Database Implementation – we will work with your team to implement an operational database archiving application.  Your team will learn the basics by working side-by-side with our expert.

Retired Database Implementation – we will work with your team to implement database archiving for an application that is no longer in use but for which the data must be retained for many years into the future.
